It was still cold out when she got in. The LeSabre immedietly filled with the stink of Triple Sec and Newports. She fastened her seatbelt and fumbled around in her purse for 3 minutes before saying a word.
'How do you feel today?' she asked
'I'm rather dull around the edges. It's as if I were drowned and brought only half way back from death. I am still waiting for my eyes to regain focus, though they never really seem to."
'Yeah I know just the feeling... Say is your brother still coming in town for the game on Saturday?'
'Oh no, you didn't hear? He got busted in that big 'meth deal gone wrong' that went down last month. I'm afraid he wont be going anywhere for a long time.'
'That's a pity. Me and the gals were hoping he would be around to do his famous Wesley Snipes impression at the tailgate... another time I suppose."
'You said it... but somehow i don't think we've seen the last of that poor bastard.'
'I really hope you're right. You know his impressions really cut me deep down to the core.'
'That's not the only thing that cuts you deep down to the core...'
Right then and there we went at it like rabid circus freaks. Her mouth tasted like pipe tobacco, and with my tongue I probed the empty cavities where her teeth used to be. In a flash the moment passed, like so many often do... with confusion and the longing for all you can eat salad and breadsticks.
I dropped her back off at her Mom's place. She said had to get up early and work the Ihop graveyard shift in town. In my heart I knew that she was lying and that I would never see her again.
For the next hour I circled her block holding down the car horn. Praying she would come running back outside and we would drive off to some exotic place together. I searched the car in hopes to find a strand of her hair, or something to remember her by. But all I found was a half eaten box of Lemonheads stuffed into the shotgun seat of the Buick. I poured it's contents into my mouth and the tears came down like rain.
